An integrated model platform for the economic assessment of agricultural policies in the European Union AgEcon
Perez Dominguez, Ignacio; Gay, Stephan Hubertus; M'Barek, Robert.
A number of economic models have been applied to analyse the Common Agricultural Policy. The partial equilibrium models CAPRI, ESIM, AGLINK, AGMEMOD and CAPSIM and the general equilibrium models GLOBE and GTAP are currently integrated in a modelling platform for Agro-Economic Policy Analysis in the premises of the Joint Research Centre in Seville in close collaboration with Directorate- General for Agriculture and Rural Development. Each of the models included has a specific focus, enlarging the capacity for complex policy analysis within this platform. This can be done by comparing the results of different models or by linking them, where several methodological options are available. This paper gives some insights on current applications in the field of...

Biological and economic factors in the selection of cultured fish species and the development of a bio-economic model ArchiMer
Wu, R.
The selection of candidate species for mariculture is determined by a number of biological factors, e.g. foraging efficiency, growth efficiency, mortality, grow-out period and susceptibility to environmental fluctuations, disease and crowding, as well as economic factors e.g. the supply and price of fry, grow-out cost and price of adult. A computer model incorporating these major factors is being developed, to determine and compare the potential of different culture species.

Desarrollo de un modelo bioeconómico para el manejo integral de un recurso pesquero OceanDocs
Bertolotti, M.I.; Verazay, G.A.; Abal, H.J..
A deterministic single-species bioeconomic model is developed in order to provide an integral fishery management. This model is structured by age, in order to simulate the effects of natural and fishing mortalities, with simple economic assumtions. Fishing mortality is estimated through the fishing effort expressed by fishing hours or by HP per fishing hours. Biological underfishing and overfishing are analyzed from the estimated economic equilibrium for period under study.

Effects of agri-environmental measures and changes in EU single farm payments on Dutch agriculture AgEcon
Helming, John F.M.; Schrijver, R.A.M..
Part of the Health check of the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) of the European Union in 2008, will be a discussion of the linkage between direct payments to farmers and the contribution of agricultural production to social important values. The objective of this paper is to analyse the economic and environmental effects of extra region specific environmental measures and a redistribution of direct payments to the Dutch agricultural sector in 2020. In doing so a chain of models is used from the dairy farm level to the regional sector level in the Netherlands to the European sector level. From the dairy farm model it is found that the extra-environmental measures result in a decrease in the number of dairy cows per ha and a decrease in the gross margin per...

Modelisation bioeconomique de la pecherie de buccin (Buccinum undatum L.: Gastropoda) du port de Granville (Manche ouest). Elements de gestion de la ressource. ArchiMer
Santarelli, L; Gros, Philippe.
The totality of French landings of whelk (Buccinum undatum L.) is assignable to the fisheries of the Normand-Breton Gulf, western Channel. The aim of this paper is to forecast economic rent of the potters of the harbour of Granville, as a function of the two main variates open to supervision: the size of the fishing fleet, and the number of whelk-pots per ship. In order to assess the biological and financial consequences of a prospective development, a deterministic model of the fleet-resource system is proposed. Results of simulations emphasize the sharpness of the rent-dissipation problem under existing tendencies. Therefore some recommendations are put forward to derive a fishery policy that would enable the system to be maintained near optimal...

Optimización en la industria pesquera OceanDocs
Arrascada, J.M..
The convenience of applying quantitative methods in companies of the fishing sector is demonstrated in order to reach competitivity, based not only in the quality of processes and products but also on the incidence of those operations. The study is examined from the point of view of a private fishing company. The characteristics of the Argentine (SW Atlantic) fishing industry are also described.

Regional Socioeconomic Impacts of Livestock Regulation - an Integrated Modelling Approach AgEcon
Hasler, Berit; Jensen, Jorgen Dejgaard; Madsen, Bjarne; Andersen, Martin; Huusom, Henrik; Jacobsen, Lars-Bo.
This paper addresses the combination of environmental regulation and rural development using an integrated economic modelling approach. Specifically, the regional impacts of regulating livestock density at the farm level are analysed in a projected 2010 setting. This scenario is motivated by a concern for nitrogen loads on ground and surface water. The applied model framework includes a macroeconomic CGE-model, an econometric agricultural sector model and a local economic model, and consistent links have been established between these models. The analyses show that the largest relative economic impacts occur in the western parts of Denmark. This occurs in the agricultural sector, because the highest livestock densities are found in the western regions, but...

The didactic value of linking models: experiences from the LEI model funnel AgEcon
Helming, John F.M.; Banse, Martin.
The complexity of agri-environmental economic issues is such that a model that is fully consistent at all levels of aggregation and all type of questions to be addressed is not available at the Agricultural Economics Research Institute in the Hague LEI. Such a model is probably also not feasible. At LEI this problem is solved by linking models at different scales of analysis: global economic, national economy-wide, regional agricultural, national spatial and farm levels. This linked model system enlarges scope and consistency of the analysis. The goal of the model linking, however, is not a full integration and, ultimately, simultaneous optimization of the models. Therefore, the different models of the LEI model funnel are often rather loosely linked....

Una aplicación de los estudios ambientales para orientar la pesqueria de la caballa Scomber japonicus en Mar del Plata OceanDocs
Perrotta, R.G.; Pertierra, J.P.; Viñas, M.D.; Macchi, G.J.; Tringali, L.S..
Both mackerel mean biomass and mean fishing effort in Buenos Aires (Argentina) shelf during the period 1990-91/1994-95 were estimated. Those values were 85,792 t and 42,051 minutes, respectively. However, the best economic profit from the fishery (about $15,390,036)($1=U$S1) was estimated to take place at 28,000 minutes. It was observed a waste in fishing effort of the commercial fleet related with sea surface temperatures of 19°C or more. Moreover, adult mackerel find better trophic conditions on the continental shelf (depth 50m), while larvae originated from massive spawning in late November-early December, i.e., during the main fishing season, find their optimum at lower depths. Mackerel shoals enter and leave fishing grounds in a counterclockwise way...

Water Policy and Sustainability of Irrigated Farming Systems in Italy AgEcon
Bartolini, Fabio; Bazzani, Guido Maria; Gallerani, Vittorio; Raggi, Meri; Viaggi, Davide.
The objective of this paper is to provide an analysis of the sustainability of irrigated agriculture in Italy in the context of CAP reform and Water Framework Directive. The work combines scenario analysis, multicriteria mathematical programming simulation models and economic, social and environmental indicators. Five irrigated farming systems were considered: cereals, rice, fruit, vegetables and citrus. The results show the diversity of Italian irrigated farming systems and the trade-off between socio-economic and environmental performance. This highlights the need for a differentiated application of the Water Framework Directive, balancing water conservation and rural development objectives.
